Services of all these Officers, or of any of them, I recommend that they be allowed to hold office until January 14, 1850, or that I be permitted to give to such as be dismissed a bonus of four or six months' salary, but on the whole, with every desire to do my duty to the State, and certainly having no personal interest in them, I shall be much pleased if your Lordship will sanction the establishments remaining as at present, leaving me to make the necessary reductions and retrenchments, as vacancies occur.
In Mr. Inglis' letter a request is made that in the event of his services being dispensed with, he may be granted pieces of Land at New Zealand on the same principle as an officer of the Army.
Should it be possible to meet his wishes - the conferring on him of privileges similar to those awarded to a Major, would at once get rid of his claim to consideration, and be in my opinion only doing justice to the individual. He has contributed to the Superannuation Fund since 1st of April 1844, and the sum thus contributed would, I presume, of course be refunded to him...
